Luray Caverns was a very fun stop. It is amazing to see the beautiful building and think that you were walking around well below it and all that exists underground.
I enjoyed seeing the different shapes in the rocks. Some they pointed out, like the big shaggy dog, which I absolutely loved. I kept seeing different dinosaur faces in the formations. I also saw a woman's face in a stalagmite. Seeing these images brought back memories of my Bubby. We would always find images in the clouds and in the burning fire in the fireplace together. The reflection of the stalactites in the shallow water created a perfect mirror image and was one of the coolest parts to see. It truly tricked your eye. In the section they called the chapel (it was called this because they hold weddings in there!) there was an organ that played music. But instead of playing through pipes as a traditional organ does, this was hooked up to 37 different stalactites to play. The stalactites and stalagmites that are still forming drip water and that is how they grow. They say if you get wet it will give you a year of good luck. I had a drop go down my back. Ella was dripped on 4 or 5 times. Maybe after her fall the caves felt bad for her and decided to give her some extra blessings. The largest formation down there was called Pluto. You could see it from all different sections of the cave. The sheer beauty of the formations is something that will stick with me forever.
After visiting Luray we drove 64 miles southwest to the Staunton / Walnut Hills KOA. Our first campsite was a quick stay but we still had enough time to enjoy it. We managed to back in to the site without too much trouble. The site was on the end of a row giving us an unobstructed lake front view with a large private grassy area. There was a creek that ran through the property and the ducks were playing and swimming freely all around. We took a dip in the pool and met a very nice couple who were giving us tips on things to do during our trip. A little boy who was swimming in the pool started having a coughing fit, to the point that he threw up in the pool. At that point we quickly exited the pool and we went back to the RV to eat our dinner. We sat looking out at the lake of which I loved the name, Kerplunken. Tomorrow we move on to the Smoky Mountains.
