July 23 (Day 43) - Coos Bay, Oregon

We loved the Redwoods of California and wished we could stay at the campsite and parks longer, but it was time to continue on. Today we would head out on one of the more anticipated drives of our trip since it would be a gorgeous ride up the coast of Oregon. We pulled out of the campground at 8:30 am and to our dismay could barely see a few feet in front of us as we pulled onto US-101 because of the thick, dense fog so this ride was not going to be so pretty.

Our destination was the Oceanside Beachfront RV Resort in Coos Bay, Oregon which was only 147 miles north of Klamath, CA. Although one of our shorter distances, we still expected 3 - 4 hours travel time because of the winding coastal drive ... and today's fog would certainly slow us down.

About two hours later, half way into the drive, the fog finally lifted and we were able to see the beautiful beach on the side of the road filled with several incredible seastacks emerging from the ocean. We came to a pullout and decided to park. Adam and I got out, climbed over the guardrail and onto the sand so we could have the opportunity to really check it out and take it all in.

It was 12:15 when we arrived at the campground. While setting up our site we needed to change into jeans and sweatshirts as the temperature was much colder than Klamath, CA. Our site was great and very convenient for a one night stay. It was a pull thru that was large enough in length and relatively level so we did not need to unhitch which saved us quite a bit of time. The site had a large open space with plenty of area for the kids to run around along with a picnic table and fire pit.

This resort was ocean side as the name said and our site was a very short walk to the beach entrance. Before we could do anything else we had to walk over to the beach. Lily immediately found an abandoned yellow shovel which made her day.

At the front of the campground was a food hut that sold clam chowder and a few other items. The girls were very excited to have the chowder and we were all ready for lunch. So we left the beach for now and headed to the hut. They had a fire pit table and adirondack chairs right in front. We sat there while we waited for our food and stayed there to eat too. The chowder was very good.

We spent the rest of the day on the beach. This was the first time in my life I spent the day on the beach in jeans and a sweatshirt and it was truly awesome. The girls were thrilled to play in the sand and Adam and I were equally thrilled to sit on the beach and read. We were practically the only people on the beach all day. Every once in awhile someone would walk by with their dog. A few times we went over to pet the dog. The girls and Adam spent some time having a catch with the ball and frisbee we brought with us. After being so busy yesterday a day like this was perfect.

As it got into the early evening we thought we better get going before it starts getting even colder. Since the girls were sandy I took them to the campground showers to get clean.

When we got back to the RV I made us dinner. The cool, crisp night called for a campfire so that was our next and final activity for the day.
