Today was another travel day on our way to Yellowstone. Our destination was the Yellowstone Holiday RV Campground which is about 14 miles outside the west entrance to Yellowstone National Park. The park is primarily in Wyoming but this campground and the west entrance of the park are still in Montana. We picked this campground because it is on a lake and more secluded than other campgrounds immediately outside the park.
We took our time this morning, slept in and had a leisurely breakfast before leaving the Indian Creek Campground in Deer Lodge, Montana. We pulled out around 11:15 am to start the 170 mile drive.
This ride was very scenic as a large stretch was through a valley surrounded by beautiful mountain ranges, lakes and streams. With one stop for gas and food we arrived at Yellowstone Holiday RV Campground in West Yellowstone around 3pm.
We had a great end site reserved. It had a large amount of open space with a clear view of Lake Hebgen. When we made the reservation back in March they warned us it may be difficult to pull into the site as it required a tight turn around a large boulder. With the help of an escort we maneuvered around the boulder and into the site with no problem.
We started to setup camp while the girls played down by the lake.
Surprisingly a storm moved in very quickly. We had just finished connecting water and electric when we started seeing thunder and lightning. This was a good opportunity for a board game and a movie. We relaxed inside until the storm passed.
Around 5:40 the storm had cleared out. It had been mostly an electrical storm with very little rain. The only step we had left to setup camp was connecting the sewer lines. This only took a few minutes.
Adam and the girls took a walk to the campground store to pickup some supplies. They were very surprised to find Huckleberry ice cream sandwiches. With all the huckleberry flavored items we found throughout Glacier this was one we had not seen. On the way back they played a few games of tetherball.
At this point it was already getting late in the evening. We ate dinner and had our huckleberry ice cream sandwiches for dessert. Our stay here would be five nights and we had four very busy days in Yellowstone ahead of us. We finished our game from earlier and called it a night.
